This Week in Kink, December 30, 2017

Tis the season for “year in review” posts, so let’s start off with one for gamers. Kotaku has their finger on the pulse of the gaming world, and they’ve just published a summary of their biggest sex stories of the year. Apparently this year there’s been a lot of it appearing (briefly) on Steam, a modder who makes $4000 a month adding sex to Sims 4, lots of crossover of Japanese erotica and some raunchy going-ons in Final Fantasy 14.

You might have thought you knew things about dicks in 2016, but Mel Magazine has been busy updating that knowledge bank all year and has just posted a summary: Everything We Learned About Our Dicks in 2017. Some surprising facts… dick flaps are disappearing in men’s underwear, dick pics are being reinvented and there is science behind which way a dick hangs.

Do people engaged in “no strings attached” (NSA) relationships engage in non-conventional sexual activities such as BDSM and group sex in the same way as those who are in committed romantic relationships? It’s known that the two groups do differ in terms of both sexual exclusivity and sexual communication.

Could it be that those who do NSA might be more inclined to participate in group sex? And BDSM requires high levels of communication, which those in committed relationships are better at, so is there a correlation there? Justin J Lehmiller surveyed 1100 people who either had a current friend-with-benefits (26%) or a current committed romantic partner (74%). He found that it is indeed the case.

So, if you’ve noticed that there is a bias towards singles in the swinger community and towards couples in the BDSM community, it would seem that research supports the idea that it is true.

Everyone is talking about blockchain currencies. Motherboard’s Now You Can Literally Get Fucked by the Price of Bitcoin looks into CamSoda service Bitcast, which tracks the real-time value of Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin and syncs with internet-connected Lovense sex toys. It works with a range of fleshlights, dildos, buttplugs, prostate massagers and vibrators. When the value goes up, the vibes intensify. When it goes down, the vibes back off.

The excitement surrounding cryptocurrency could only be hotter if it brought investors to climax!” Daryn Parker, vice president of CamSoda, told me in an email. “Now, in addition to the euphoria investors receive from their investment starting to take off, they’ll be able to simultaneously get off. Tracking your investment has never been more fun. It’s the ultimate high, the ultimate experience and it’s what we’re all about here at CamSoda.

One of my very early introductions to some of the more fringe kinks out there was Katharine Gates’ Deviant Desires (Juno Books, 2000), with its features on Sploshers, Crushers, Balloonatics, Pony Players, Feeders & Gainers and ABDLs. It was a non-judgemental tour of some subcultures you might not come across otherwise, and I still own a copy of the grainy black and white original.

It has just been updated and republished, and Deviant Desires: A Tour of the Erotic Edge (powerHouse Books) features new chapters on Cannibals and Foot Fetishists, and is now in glorious full-colour.
